The procedure on the emergency conditions are still lagging and we don't get an essential fast services for this. Finally I may say that asking questions doesn't take the way, it is just a false law and providing immediate service is the real thing which should be provide.

Re: Location & Cooperation, Your guide to 911

Very good information. It needs to be shared widely throughout our communities.

Re: Dispatcher Stress & Comfort

One of the best sources out there here. http://headsets911.com

Re: Safety a Priority? No questions asked. The officer is dispatched to us code 3. It works really well.

Re: Fact or nothing like it…

You mean you expect us to not go by the time honored tradition of blaming dispatch for every mistake? You expect too much! :p
Seriously though, I've been on calls where it's just too bizarre to even begin to have an accurate dispatch info for, and when dispatch is updated they sound like they think WE'RE crazy...

Ya know, they might not be that far from the truth.

Re: Just Because

We all run into these situations including those who are sometimes known as "frequent flyers". Mr. French (below) is correct, this job is an honor, no matter what the situation. None of us can possibly know all of a persons problems or motivations and we must treat each and every call as the most important call of the moment, because that is just what it is. I have had occasion to transport several people to emergency rooms and in each case, it was likely that they were looking for pain medication, oft times because they were addicted to opiates. Rather than assume the worst, I have looked further into each situation and have learned that for many, the real issue IS pain and I have been able to ask ER personnel to refer the patients to pain management specialists to hopefully help treat the management of chronic problems. It is not my job, either as an EMT or as a human being to judge these patients. That job belongs to a Higher Power.

Re: Just Because

Very well written commentary. We have the same MO. As a BLS then ALS Preceptor, I always began our partnership with a conversation about kindness. Your "Just Because" is my "You can never be kind enough".

I try to impress this on a lot of my students (and new, impulsive partners from time to time). People forget the honor that comes with this job from the little, seemingly insignificant events. (having said this, I will recognize that many people in certain demographics do totally waste our time often). Very well written and I will share this.

Re: Location, Location, Location!

You're correct digital phones present a whole new problem as well. While the Cable Companies have gotten a lot better cable modems are normally only programmable by the cable companies which means if you move the modem without having it corrected and dial 911 at a different address the modem will use the number and information from where it's supposed to be located. There are even warnings on some units saying not to move it without contacting the cable company.

Voice over Internet Protocol phones or VoIP such as Vonage, Magic Jack, etc. have the same problem however these phones are programmed by the user. Which most people do not know how to format the address properly as used by their local 911 center which can cause some issues. Some people also are not aware of their proper address as I touched on above. You may have a mailing address in say the Village of Oakridge but actually reside in the Town of Lewis which neighbors it.

You can always have a 911 test call completed but it should be requested before just dialing 911. You can ask your local police agency about how to do it by calling them on a non-Emergency line for information. Your phone/cable company may also have some information to give you as well.

Re: Location, Location, Location!

Also, if you have digital phone for your land line, be sure your provider has you set up with the right 911 system.
We've had a number of incidents where a department from the wrong county has been dispatched to a call because the county lines, the phone numbers, the mailing addresses and the fire districts aren't all the same lines. People have a billing address that appears to be in a different county from where they actually live. I know, that's ridiculous, but it's the way it is here, and probably other places as well.

Re: Location, Location, Location!

Great advice!
